A strong relationship exists between human development and energy consumption: per capita energy demand in countries with “very high HDI” is 2.3 times that of “high HDI” countries, 6.9 times that of “medium HDI” countries, and 9 times that of “low HDI” countries. With nearly four-fifths of the world’s population living in countries below the “very high” HDI threshold in 2019, continued development will require greater energy consumption, not less.
