A complete transition of the U.S. vehicle fleet to electric power would require the grid to generate an additional 1.4 trillion kilowatt-hours, or 33% more electricity. Given that U.S. electricity generation grew at an annualized rate of 0.4% over the past decade, accommodating a full EV transition at that pace would take approximately 79.8 years.
